a practical guide

Fear Fighters [Book Review]

The book Fear Fighters deals with a choice we have to face on a daily basis; will you live in fear or will you live by faith? Fear has been widely accepted as part of our daily life and the world we live in. But do you really have to accept the influence of fear in your life? What threats are you facing? Are you scared of crime, violence, the economy, death, eternity? Fear Fighters will help you to identify the source of your fear and show you how to overcome it. It will help you to build your faith and even reach out to others and assist them in their battle against fear.

The author of the book, Jentezen Franklin is a New York Times bestselling author. He also authored the NYT bestselling books Right People, Right Place, Right Plan and Fasting. Jentezen Franklin is the senior pastor of Free Chapel in Gainesville, Georgia and Free Chapel in Irvine, California. Originally on his way to become a professional saxophone player, he played in the college jazz band along with his brother Richie. Yet, he felt led by God to become an evangelist and after his brother graduated, he decided to quit college and pursued the ministry under the guidance of his father.

What is Fear Fighters All About?

Jentezen Franklin is very good at encouraging people and it is no different when you read his book Fear FightersHe keeps it very practical and often refers to situations in his own life when he also had to (and still has to) face fear. In describing some of the situations, he has the ability to use his fine sense of humor to make it stick, yet it doesn’t take away anything from the seriousness of the subject at hand.

In Fear Fighters Jentezen Franklin helps you to identify the source of your fear and then guides you in practical ways to overcome that fear. Topics which are discussed include:fear

  • Face your fear.
  • A fuss about nothing.
  • Your safe haven against fear.
  • Your battle of faith.
  • Fight for your family.
  • Fear of lack.
  • Fear of failure.
  • Fear of people.
  • Fear of eternity.

At the end of each chapter he provides what he calls “a fear fighter’s arsenal”. These are scriptures to encourage you in your battle against fear.

My Personal Take on Fear Fighters

I have personally read the book, and especially when I had to face the ugly monster of being unemployed, this book was of incredible value to me. When I felt like a failure, it showed me how to not waste my time on the past and how I could use what I saw as failure, and use it to my advantage. It showed me how to deal with the fear of lack, and how to take up the responsibility of stewardship, to make the best of what I did have. You might be blinded by the fact that you have an empty bank account, but God will not forsake you. If you start focusing on what He does give you, doors start opening. What talents do you have? What are you capable of doing? Pray about it. Do some soul searching, and take action.

Fighting Fear

After the release of his book Fear FightersJentezen Franklin spoke at a youth conference that was attended by ten thousand young people, where he brought a message on the same topic. You can watch the message on the video below.

In these times of uncertainty, fast paced living, violence and crime, this book is a must read in my opinion.
